Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s mentor and batting coach Dinesh Karthik has shared the experience of coaching the iconic batter Virat Kohli at the franchise in the ongoing IPL 2025. Dinesh Karthik, who joined RCB’s support staff this season, said that coaching a legend like Virat Kohli is a unique experience for him.
Karthik further went on to explain that coaching a legend like Virat Kohli, who has already achieved everything in the game, is not about giving instructions, but rather more about being there for support. The RCB mentor even claimed that sometimes it is like Kohli is coaching him.

The former Indian wicketkeeper-batter also mentioned that the world-class players don’t need technical advice; instead, they just want someone to stand by them during tough times. And that’s exactly what he is doing in his new role with Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Dinesh Karthik told Mayanti Langer on the RCB Podcast: “Players like that don’t need coaching. I think it can be a bit overrated. What they need is support and care. They just want you as a coach to know that in case I have a bad day, treat me the same.
He is a man who has achieved everything possible in this sport. And we want more out of him, which is fair; he is doing everything possible.”
Virat Kohli probably teaches me a little bit more than I teach him anything: Dinesh Karthik
Furthermore, Karthik said that sometimes it’s Virat Kohli who teaches him things, not the other way around. The RCB mentor also admitted that he hasn’t taught the dashing right-hander anything himself, saying the former Indian skipper knows everything.
The RCB mentor added, “So, when I just stand behind the nets, I just observe; I watch. It’s only fair to say that it’s the other way around. He probably teaches me a little bit more than I teach him.
And so far, I haven’t taught him anything. He knows it all. Just because I have become a coach over a period of 3 months, it’s not like I can teach him how to play the sport.”
