Four weeks in advance of the 151st running of the $5 million Kentucky Derby (G1), bettors made San Felipe Stakes (G2) winner Journalism the mild 5-1 favorite with champion 2-year-old Citizen Bull the 8-1 second choice in the sixth and final pool of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager April 5. Both horses were scheduled to face each other in the Santa Anita Derby (G1) later Saturday evening.
The three-day pool closed Saturday at 4 p.m. ET in advance of the three final Road to the Kentucky Derby Championship Series races: Saturday’s Wood Memorial (G1) and Santa Anita Derby (G1), and Tuesday’s rescheduled Blue Grass Stakes (G1).
Total handle for the three-day April 3-5 KDFW pool—the final future wager pool in advance of the May 3 Kentucky Derby—was $483,121 ($353,160 in the Win Pool and $129,961 in Exactas), a 28.5% gain vs. last year’s $376,038 ($268,996 in the Win Pool and $107,042 in Exactas).
A total of $2,330,748 was bet on Derby and Oaks future wagers this year, a 13.6% increase from last year’s $2,052,391.
