Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif has made shocking claims about match-fixing in the 1990s after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The former wicketkeeper-batter said that he is writing a book that will expose the fixing during that era, stating that he will reveal how it happened and who was involved.
Former all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez recently criticized Pakistan’s 1990s cricket stars, calling them underachievers who left little legacy. Rashid Latif played for Pakistan from 1992 to 2003 and also led the team in a few matches. Latif featured in 37 Tests and 166 ODIs and has a Test century to his name.
Match-Fixing Was at Its Peak in the ’90s – Rashid Latif
Rashid Latif stated that fixing was at its peak during that era and promised to disclose how it happened and who was involved in his upcoming book.
“I have started writing a book. Match-fixing was at its peak in the ’90s. I will expose everything—how fixing happened and who was involved. I will disclose what went on in ’90s cricket and also reveal which former captain submitted a presidential pardon request,” Rashid Latif said (quoted by Sportstak).
Several Pakistani cricketers were investigated by Justice Malik Muhammad Qayyum over match-fixing allegations in the 1990s. Wasim Akram was barred from captaining Pakistan again and fined, but he avoided severe punishment due to the lack of evidence.
It Took 17 Years for Pakistan to Win Another World Cup – Rashid Latif
The 56-year-old stated that the involvement of Pakistan’s 1990s stars in the team’s management hindered progress, adding that it took Pakistan 17 years to win another World Cup. Latif said that these former players should step aside to allow the current generation to strive for success.
“It took 17 years for Pakistan to win another World Cup because the ’90s players didn’t let go. Keep the ’90s players away from management and the team, then the current players will try to win. They must be tired of serving Pakistan. Let them take a step back for a while,” Latif stated.
Pakistan won their first and only ODI World Cup in 1992 under Imran Khan’s captaincy. The Men in Green came close to winning the 1996 and 1999 editions but fell short. They lost to Australia in the final of the 1999 ODI World Cup.
Pakistan’s ICC Struggles Continue in 2025 Champions Trophy
Pakistan exited in the group stage of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. After early eliminations in the 2023 ODI World Cup and 2024 T20 World Cup, expectations were high for their home tournament. However, they suffered heavy defeats to New Zealand and India, finishing last in Group A.
Since their 1992 ODI World Cup triumph, Pakistan have won only two ICC titles—the 2009 T20 World Cup and 2017 Champions Trophy. Their Test team finished last in the 2023-25 WTC and failed to qualify for the WTC final in all three editions. They also endured a 0-2 home series loss to Bangladesh.
