India’s star cricketer Virat Kohli might have become a huge name in the cricketing world but there was a time when he was still learning under his captain MS Dhoni. There was a time when Dhoni was India’s captain with Kohli being the vice-captain of the team.
Virat Kohli has recently revealed an incident when both him and Dhoni were in leadership roles. Kohli revealed that he was always in Dhoni’s ears at that time making him feel like a crazy man in front of his captain.

Virat Kohli recalls being MS Dhoni’s deputy
During RCB Innovation Lab’s Indian sports summit, Virat Kohli was asked about his bonding with the legendary MS Dhoni. Kohli revealed that he was always telling something to MS Dhoni after every over.
Further speaking on the topic, Kohli admitted that Dhoni must have thought him to be crazy for telling so many things. While revealing this information, Kohli was observed to be laughing at his older self.
“When MS Dhoni was the Captain & I was the Vice Captain — I was always in his ears in every over like ‘If we put a fielder over there – one to the deep mid wicket, one to long on, if the Catch is taken, we can win’ — and he was like ‘That is crazy’ (smiles),” said Kohli.

Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni shared a great bond with each other as both of them treated each other with utmost respect. Dhoni had played a big role in Kohli’s transformation not only as a captain but also as a batter.
Dhoni guided Kohli to become the next Indian captain after him and ensured that the transformation was smooth. Dhoni even carried on playing under Kohli’s captaincy for quite some time which helped in the latter producing some incredible results as a captain.
MS Dhoni’s captaincy records
MS Dhoni is regarded as one of the best captains to have ever played the game. Under his leadership, Kohli learned a lot and led India in some important games. Dhoni led India to three top ICC titles – ICC T20 World Cup 2007, ICC ODI World Cup 2011, and ICC Champions Trophy 2013.
Dhoni has also led Chennai Super Kings to a record five IPL titles. He is the most successful captain for India across formats with 178 wins in 332 matches at a win percentage of 53.61.

On the other hand, Virat Kohli is the third most successful captain of India with 135 wins in 213 international matches at a win percentage of 63.38. Kohli left the captaincy in 2021 and gave it to Rohit Sharma.
Dhoni and Kohli will be next seen in IPL 2025 where they will be playing for their respective franchises. Dhoni will be playing for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) while Kohli will feature for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
