Up to the Mark Improves Position in NTRA Poll

Though none of the leading horses in the National Thoroughbred Racing Association Top Thoroughbred Poll raced this past week, there was some movement in the poll, with Echo Zulu  dropping from third to eighth after a career-ending fetlock injury during training.

The Steve Asmussen-trained 4-year-old daughter of Gun Runner  , the champion 2-year-old filly of 2021, underwent surgery Oct. 14 to repair a biaxial sesamoid fracture, which occurred while working Oct. 13 at Santa Anita Park in preparation for the Breeders’ Cup. She compiled a 9-1-1-0 record in 11 starts and earned $2,640,375 for owners L and N Racing and Winchell Thoroughbreds.

The NTRA Top Thoroughbred Poll, conducted by national media and covering racing performances through Oct. 15, represents horses competing for Horse of the Year. The poll, currently led by Belmont Stakes (G1) and Travers Stakes (G1) winner Arcangelo , concludes Nov. 7, shortly after the Breeders’ Cup.

Climbing two spots from fifth to third and passing Juddmonte’s reigning champion sprinter, Elite Power , is Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable’s turf horse Up to the Mark  . The latter is 5-for-6 this year and riding a three-race win streak in grade 1s for Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher, topped by a dramatic victory in the Oct. 7 Coolmore Turf Mile (G1T) at Keeneland in his final start before the Breeders’ Cup.
