T20 World Cup 2024: ‘Rohit Sharma alone can’t win World Cup’

Harbhajan Singh has come up with an important piece of advice for Team India ahead of the T20 World Cup. Part of India’s victorious squad of the 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup, the former spinner has urged the Men in Blue to focus on ‘we’ and not ‘me’ in order to end the country’s long wait for an ICC trophy.

Team India have not won the T20 World Cup since MS Dhoni-led them to glory in 2007, the inaugural edition of the competition. They have also not qualified for the final of the tournament since 2014. In the last edition, India’s campaign ended at the semifinal stage with a humiliating 10-wicket defeat against eventual winners England.

And as India gear up for the marquee event, Harbhajan Singh has urged Rohit Sharma & Co. to play as a team. The former India spin spearhead said that the team can achieve anything with the collective effort of the players.

“Rohit Sharma alone can’t win the Cup, it is about ‘we’ and not ‘me’. The more we play like ‘we’, you can achieve anything,” Harbhajan Singh said while speaking on ‘Star Sports Press Room’ on Wednesday.

Harbhajan Singh on the World Cup taking place right after the IPL:

The T20 World Cup will begin in less than a week’s time after the IPL ends. While the IPL 2024 will end on May 26, the World Cup is scheduled to get underway on June 1. Many believe that it could affect Team India’s chances as the players will be tired after the grueling campaign in the IPL.

Speaking about it, Harbhajan Singh advised the Indian players to view the T20 World Cup as an extension of the IPL and adjust their mindset accordingly.

“IPL is a tiring tournament, travel is very tiring. The players will be physically and mentally a bit tired but they need to look at it as an extended part of the IPL. There is nothing bigger than the World Cup, you need to give your best, you have to be switched on the given day. You have to bowl well, bat well and field well,” he said.

“Winning a world cup is not going to be easy, you have to be mentally strong,” he added.

Team India will be opening their campaign in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 on June 5 against Ireland before locking horns against Pakistan on June 9.
