Sri Lanka women to host West Indies women for white-ball series as preparation for Asia Cup 2024

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has announced that the West Indies Women’s Team is scheduled to tour Sri Lanka for a white-ball series in June 2024. The Sri Lanka women’s team will host a three-match ODI series and a three-match T20I series as per the schedule.

The forthcoming white-ball series against the West Indies Women’s Team will serve as crucial preparation for the home team ahead of the Women’s T20 Asia Cup. Sri Lanka is scheduled to host the upcoming Women’s T20 Asia Cup 2024, starting on July 20.

After nearly seven years, Sri Lanka Women will play their bilateral series against West Indies Women. In their last encounter in 2017, West Indies Women asserted their dominance, securing comprehensive 3-0 victories in both the ODI and T20 series.

Sri Lanka Women To Host West Indies Women In June

The ODI series between Sri Lanka and the West Indies will commence on June 15 at the Galle International Cricket Stadium, Galle. The remaining two matches will be played at the same venue on June 18 and 21, respectively.

This series is part of the ICC Women’s Championship. The West Indies and Sri Lanka are placed seventh and eighth, respectively, in the standings. The top four teams, along with the host nation, India, will directly qualify for the ODI World Cup 2025.

The T20Is between the Sri Lanka women’s team and the West Indies women’s team will begin on June 24 and conclude on June 28. All three matches will be played at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium in Hambantota.

West Indies Holds Strong Record Against Sri Lanka

The West Indies have a decent record against Sri Lanka in T20 internationals, with 18 wins to Sri Lanka’s 4. However, in one-day internationals, the West Indies has won 18 matches while Sri Lanka has won 14.

The upcoming tour could be a closely contested series, given Sri Lanka’s recent victories against strong teams like England, New Zealand, and South Africa.

Sri Lanka will face Ireland in August. Sri Lanka Women’s head coach, Rumesh Ratnayake, acknowledged the challenges of transitioning from the conditions in Ireland to those in Bangladesh for the T20 World Cup.

“That takes us a bit away from the T20 World Cup because wickets and conditions are going to be totally different to Bangladesh. But that’s cricket. If you are in the major league you have to make sure you adapt to it. It’s not the best scenario but these are bilateral tours organised by the ICC which we have to follow. However, we have about a month before the World Cup after Ireland to prepare,” Ratnayake said.
