Sierra Leone Takes Over Top Spot in NTRA 3YO Poll

With undefeated Nysos  experiencing a setback, Risen Star Stakes (G2) winner Sierra Leone  took over the top spot in week eight of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association’s top 3-year-old poll.

It was reported March 12 that Nysos, impressive winner of the Robert B. Lewis Stakes (G3), would need 30 days of tack walking. Trainer Bob Baffert said the setback was minor, but the Nyquist   colt’s race plans are on hold.

Nysos still received 17 of the poll’s 32 first-place votes, but he dropped to third overall. Rebel Stakes (G2) winner Timberlake  moved up to second.

There was only one significant change this week in the NTRA’s top Thoroughbred Poll, which tracks NTRA voter opinion for Horse of the Year. Didia , winner of the Pegasus Filly & Mare Turf Invitational Stakes (G1) Jan. 27, moved up to the eighth spot after being ranked 36th the previous week. Didia has worked twice at Keeneland Race Course, on Feb. 16 and March 1, since that victory.

Saudi Cup (G1) winner Senor Buscador  remained No. 1 in the top Thoroughbred poll, receiving 26 of 32 first-place votes. The March 30 Dubai World Cup (G1) is next for Senor Buscador and fifth-ranked Newgate , winner of the Santa Anita Handicap (G1).

The Chosen Vron , winner of the San Carlos Stakes (G3) March 16, received one first-place vote and was ranked 12th overall.
