Nothing Like You needed every inch of the seaside stretch to catch midstretch leader Tambo in the $100,000 Desi Arnaz Stakes at Del Mar Nov. 18.
The victorious Bob Baffert-trained Malibu Moon juvenile filly posted a mild upset as the second choice behind 2-5 favorite Royal Slipper , who faded in the stretch to finish a disappointing third.
The winner, bred by Notch Hill Farm, Wolverton Mountain Farm, and Spendthrift Stallions, made it back-to-back wins after a runaway one-mile gate-to-wire maiden score Oct. 14 at Santa Anita. She is now 2-1-0 from five starts with earnings of $117,160 for owners Georgia Antley Hunt, Jeff Giglio, and John Rogitz.
Kentucky-bred Nothing Like You sat patiently along the rail in third and later fourth early before rallying outside and running down Tambo by a nose. She covered seven furlongs in 1:23.03 after splits of :22.03 and :45.55 set by Royal Slipper, who Tambo had chased. Nothing Like You paid $11.40 to win.
Post-Race Reaction
- “I’d have felt better if we were going two turns,” Baffert said. “Distance is this filly’s friend, and I wasn’t sure if we got up in time.”
- Baffert added that the Desi Arnaz “sets her up perfectly” for the $300,000 Los Alamitos Starlet (G2), a 1 1/16-mile dirt race at Los Alamitos Race Course Dec. 9.
