National women’s boxing championships to be held from March 21-27, to conclude a day before BFI elections

The National women’s boxing championships will be held at the Gautam Buddha University (GBU), Greater Noida, from March 21 to 27, concluding a day before the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) elections.

The tournament, earlier planned in February, was postponed while the BFI could not hold its elections by the due date of February 2.

Soon after the Delhi High Court stayed the Indian Olympic Association’s decision to replace the BFI with an ad-hoc committee for not holding its elections in time, the federation decided to conduct its polls on March 28.

As per the BFI’s assessment around 300 elite boxers will compete in the National championships, for which the last date to send entries is March 10 (by number) and March 15 (by name), at the GBU which also hosted the previous edition in December 2023.

The championships will be held as per the rules and regulations of the new international federation, World Boxing (WB), to which the BFI is now affiliated. Boxers will be able to compete in the following weight categories: 45-48kg, 48-51kg, 51-54kg, 54-57kg, 57-60kg, 60-65kg, 65-70kg, 70-75kg, 75-90kg and +80kg.

“As the first Nationals in the new Olympic preparation cycle, this edition will be crucial in identifying and grooming boxers for the next three years,” said BFI secretary general Hemanta Kalita.

While WB recently got the provisional recognition from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the sport is yet to be included in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics programme.
