Godolphin homebred Master of The Seas ran to his odds, winning the Woodbine Mile (G1T) at Woodbine by about four lengths over Shirl’s Speight and earning fees- and travel-paid berth to the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1T).
Master of The Seas, the 2/5 favorite, broke last from the rail and did not appear comfortable early as longshot My Sea Cottage led a field of six through fractions of :23.68 and :47.32. Jockey William Buick moved Master of The Seas off the rail to pick off horses entering the turn and was pulled into contention at the top of the stretch. It was anybody’s race, at least for a brief moment, until Master of The Seas effortlessly darted away to open up on the rest of the field, winning by a widening margin of about four lengths in 1:33.79.

It was a Woodbine Mile repeat for Godolphin, Buick, and trainer Charlie Appleby, who won this race last year with Modern Games , who would go on to win the Breeders’ Cup Mile.
Shirl’s Speight, fourth in this race last year en route to a runner-up effort in the Breeders’ Cup Mile, also closed well for second, a head in front of Lucky Score in third.
