Former Australia captains Aaron Finch and Michael Clarke share their thoughts on veteran opener David Warner’s future in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Aaron Finch and Michael Clarke stated that David Warner would be picked in the upcoming IPL mega auction.
David Warner failed to make an impact for Delhi Capitals (DC) in the ongoing tournament. The left-handed batter scored 168 runs in eight matches at a disappointing average of 21 and a strike rate of 134.40. He recorded scores of 18, 10, 8, 1, and 1 in his last five innings.
The Delhi Capitals are virtually eliminated from the T20 tournament. The Rishabh Pant-led team is in fifth place in the table with 14 points from as many matches. The DC team recorded a 19-run victory in their last league stage match against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).
David Warner Had A Poor Year – Aaron Finch
Speaking on ESPNCricinfo, Aaron Finch said that David Warner will be picked in the IPL 2025 mega auction, considering his valuable experience. Finch stated that Warner’s experience could still be beneficial to teams despite poor outings in the IPL 2024.
“With a big auction coming up later in the year, I suspect that there’d be a team out there that would love to have his experience there, whether it’s in their plans for the first eleven or whether it’s just as a replacement and somebody to help nurture the younger players in the group. So I wouldn’t say it’s his last IPL game, but he had a poor year,” Finch said.
David Warner scored 6565 in 184 IPL matches at an impressive average of 40.52 and a strike rate of 139.77. He hit 62 fifties and four centuries, with the best score of 126. Warner is the third-highest run-getter in IPL history, trailing behind Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan.
He’ll Get Picked Up At The Auction – Michael Clarke
Michael Clarke expressed confidence that David Warner would be selected in the auction. However, Clarke stated that Warner will get less money than before due to his recent performance.
“I think he’ll get picked up at the auction. He just mightn’t get the money that he’s used to. I think that is probably going to be the difference. He’s at that stage of his career as well. When you’re not performing at your absolute best, you probably can’t expect the same money. So I’m sure he’ll put himself back in the auction, and I’d be very surprised if he’s not picked up,” Clarke said.
The 37-year-old is set to retire from international cricket after the upcoming T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA. The veteran batter retired from Tests and ODIs earlier this year. He is expected to play in franchise leagues across the world after his retirement.
David Warner won the T20 World Cup in the 2021 edition. The Australian team was eliminated from the group stage in the last edition of the ICC tournament at home. Warner hopes to end his career with a title victory in his last outing for Australia.
