Yashasvi Jaiswal on the cusp of achieving this sensational feat in first T20I against Sri Lanka

India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal needs just 47 runs to become the first player in the world to complete 1000 runs in international cricket in the year 2024. Jaiswal is likely to open alongside Shubman Gill in the first T20I of the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka. The match will be played on July 27 (Saturday) at Pallekele.

The left-hander has been in good form lately and can get a big score in the match. Although he didn’t get any game in India’s victorious T20 World Cup 2024 campaign, Jaiswal showed good form with the bat in the series against Zimbabwe, where he emerged as the second-highest run-getter of the series with 141 runs in 3 matches at an average of 70.50 and a strike rate of 165.88.

In 2024, Yashasvi Jaiswal has scored 953 runs in 16 innings so far. He scored 740 runs in six Tests and smashed 213 runs in five T20Is so far. He played five out of the six Tests in the famous home Test series against England where he plundered 712 runs at a brilliant average of 89 and a strike rate of almost 80. He is yet to play an ODI match.

The second man behind Jaiswal on the list of most runs in 2024 is Ibrahim Zadran of Afghanistan who has scored 844 runs in 2024 so far. India’s Test and ODI captain is also on this list and is at No. 3 with 833 runs. Meanwhile, India’s new vice-captain in T20Is and ODIs Shubman Gill is seventh on this list with 691 runs so far.

Despite his talent, Yashasvi Jaiswal did not find a place in India’s Playing XI in the T20 World Cup 2024 as India opted for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as their openers. Jaiswal was the third opener in the side as India clinched their second-ever T20 World Cup title and the first ICC trophy in 11 years.

Selectors looking at Yashasvi Jaiswal for the future

With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli having retired from T20I format after India’s triumph in T20 World Cup 2024, the selectors are looking at Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill as the replacements for the two legends.

Yashasvi Jaiswal has a fabulous record in both the Tests and T20Is. In 9 Tests, he has scored 1028 runs at an average of 68.53. The left-hander has already scored a double-hundred in his short international career so far. He has three centuries and four half-centuries to his name in Test cricket.

In T20Is, Yashasvi Jaiswal has scored 643 runs in 20 matches at an average of 37.82 and a strike rate of 162.78. His ability to score quick runs at the top is a crucial aspect of his T20 batting.
