India wicketkeeper batter Wriddhiman Saha came up with a massive statement. He said that the Indian Premier League (IPL) is not his prime focus as all he is thinking about is doing well for his state team Bengal and helping win the Ranji Trophy.
Wridhhiman Saha has been one of the senior players going around in Indian cricket. He arguably was the best keeper for the national team in the Tests and also came up with handy contributions with the bat for the team in difficult situations, helping them get out of trouble.
Wridhhiman Saha has been a stalwart in the Indian Premier League as well as the domestic circuit. In both the tournaments, he has represented different teams and his experience is one of the standout features of his career. The keeper-batter also has helped his teams win various games with his batting and keeping.
Wridhhiman Saha will be representing Bengal in the upcoming domestic cricket. The keeper-batter didn’t play for his state team as he represented Tripura and played the last two seasons for the Northeast state. However, this time around he will be donning a Bengal shirt again for the domestic season.
Wridhhiman Saha, who has played IPL regularly since its inception, said that he is in talks with Gujarat Titans coach Ashish Nehra but stated that he isn’t focused on retention. He said that his current focus is on playing for Bengal. Speaking to MyKhel, he explained:
“I talk with everyone. But the team selection for IPL is in December, hence I haven’t thought about it. My responsibility is to play on the ground, team selection is not in my hands,”
“My sole focus is to play well for Bengal and perform for my state. I am thinking about the Ranji Trophy first, no such emphasis on IPL at the moment,”
With IPL 2024 all set to have a mega auction and teams set to be allowed 6 retentions as per the reports, it will be interesting to see if Saha will be retained by the Gujarat Titans or not.
“Being in the Indian team itself is a big thing”- Wriddhiman Saha
Wridhhiman Saha talked about the challenge of playing for the Indian team. He highlighted that bowlers are getting chances in the Indian team due to the workload management but it’s tough for batters to cut into the national team. He explained:
“Being in the Indian team itself is a big thing. Yes, the bowlers are getting chances because some bowlers get rested, but the batters like Abhimanyu Easwaran, all-rounder such as Shahbaz Ahmed are getting into the team because of their performances, which is a positive for Bengal cricket.”
Bengal has produced quite a few big players for the Indian team. The likes of Mohammed Shami, Akash Deep, and Mukesh Kumar have played for India, but no frontline batter from Bengal has donned the India shirt since Manoj Tiwary and Wriddhiman Saha.
