Usman Khawaja reminisced about a memorable catch he took during the 2018 Adelaide Test match. He vividly recalled dismissing Virat Kohli, the then-Indian captain, with a spectacular catch at gully.
Kohli, who was leading a relatively inexperienced Indian side, was out for a mere three runs. Khawaja’s catch significantly impacted the game, leaving India struggling at 19/3.
Khawaja described his catch as a “belter.”
The Australian batter admitted that the dismissal of a key player like Kohli early in the innings was a significant moment.
“It was a newer team, some new guys, younger guys in there. Virat was the one and he showed that series he scores a lot of runs and to get him out early like that. Yeah it was pretty cool but it all happened so quickly, honestly. Because you get a wicket and you’re off to the next one so its like you can’t really enjoy it at the time.”
He also acknowledged the rapid pace of the game, which often prevents players from fully savouring such moments in real-time.
“I actually haven’t seen that since then so its pretty cool.”
“Its amazing, you score so many hundreds, you win so many games and do all the other things but things like things like that stick out the most because your teammates around you. Its such a cool feeling because if you a score a hundred you’re always by yourself or with the guy at the other end its cool but one thing I have always envied bowlers at because they get wickets and everyone is around them.” he added.
Khawaja reflected on the unique joy of taking a catch. He contrasted it with the more individualistic experience of scoring a century.
“That went in nicely too, didn’t I. Plucked it right in. Right in the sweet spot. It was probably my third best catch of all time.” he concluded.
India went on to this win this match powered by a century by Cheteshwar Pujara in first innings and another 71 runs in second innings. India won the match by 31 runs and went on to win the Test series later.
