Mohammed Shami delivered an absolute beauty to get the better of Steve Smith for 41.

Premier India pacer Mohammed Shami produced a peach of a delivery to get rid of Steve Smith in the first ODI match against Australia at Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali. Shami was picked in the XI in place of Mohammed Siraj who was rested after his recent exploits with the ball in the Asia Cup final. Shami grabbed the opportunity with both hands and produced a stellar show of seam and swing bowling on a flat batting surface.

It was the 22nd over of the innings when Shami was recalled into the attack and produced an absolute jaffa to clean up Smith. The ball nipped back in as Smith edged the ball and went on to hit the leg stumps. Smith, who made a return to competitive after recovering from injury, scored 41 runs.

Meanwhile, Smith was Shami’s second victim of the day as earlier in the first over itself he got the better of Mitchell Marsh for 4. It was a sharp outswinger as Marsh edged it to the slip where Shubman Gill claimed an easy catch.

Earlier, India captain KL Rahul won the toss and elected to bowl first against Australia in the series opener. The flamboyant wicketkeeper led the Indian team in the absence of Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya.

Rahul said Mohali’s reputation of being a good chasing ground was behind his decision to bowl first, with the pitch report suggesting a placid pitch for Friday’s match.

“We’ll bowl first. Historically a good chasing ground, that’s about it. There are a few boxes that we need to tick and the boxes that we’ve ticked we need to keep doing it better. One more challenge, best team in the world so good to play against them. They are a very competitive team so we’ve enjoyed playing against them. It’s always a great challenge,” Rahul said at the toss.
