Stand-in Indian captain KL Rahul showcased a class act against Australia in the 2nd ODI at the Holkar Stadium in Indore on Sunday. After a 200-run partnership between Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill for the 2nd wicket, Rahul played a blistering 52-run knock off 38 deliveries, being one of the major contributors in India’s 399/5 – which is now the men in blue’s highest score against Aussies in the ODIs.

Rahul went off the mark with a maximum and smashed three of them during his stay in the middle. But one six landed on the roof of the Holkar Stadium which halted the play for a while. The incident happened in the 35th over when Cameron Green bowled a length delivery that clocked 131 kmph. Rahul had the ball in the slot and clobbered it over deep mid-wicket as the ball sailed over the roof.

The Indian skipper, along with Suryakuamr Yadav, plundered the Australian bowling attack with a 53-run partnership for the fifth wicket. The last 10 overs yielded 103 runs as India racked up their highest-ever total against Australia in ODIs.

Earlier, Gill (104 off 97 balls) and Iyer (105 off 90 balls) shared a stroke-filled 200-run stand off 164 balls after Ruturaj Gaikwad (8) missed out on a batting beauty. It was a second consecutive ODI hundred for Gill at this venue, having hammered 112 off 78 balls against New Zealand earlier this year when India ended with a match-winning 395.

The highlight of Gill’s knock was how frequently he danced down the track against the fast bowlers while Iyer’s aggressive intent from ball one stood out in a scenario where he was desperately searching for runs.

Suryakumar, who had to change his game in the previous match to adapt to the needs of ODI cricket, came out to bat in the 41st over. It was an ideal time for him to come and explore his 360 range from ball one. He did just that to power India to a formidable total.

For Australia, Green was the most expensive bowler for the day as he conceded 103 runs in his 10 overs.
