The former Indian opener said that this aspect of the Hitman’s captaincy sets him apart from others, including MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli. Sehwag was part of India’s historic triumphs in the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup under Dhoni’s captaincy.

However, the former explosive batter has emphasized that Rohit’s approach to handling the team and utilizing his bowlers was instrumental in securing India’s second ICC title in less than a year. Notably, the Men in Blue had won the T20 World Cup in 2024.

Sehwag pointed out that Rohit’s decision-making shows his tactical clarity and his strategic thinking makes him a better captain than Dhoni and Kohli.

Virender Sehwag was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz, “We underrate his (Rohit’s) captaincy, but after these two trophies, he became the second (Indian) captain after Dhoni to win multiple ICC titles. The way the captain has used his bowlers, the way he has handled the team, the way he has guided the team, and whatever communication he does, he does it very clearly.
Whether it’s playing Harshit Rana first ahead of Arshdeep Singh or bringing in Varun Chakravarty in place of Harshit Rana, he has communicated well with his players, which was important. That’s why Rohit Sharma is a better captain.”

Sehwag further highlighted how Rohit prioritizes the team over himself. Sehwag emphasized that Rohit creates a comfortable environment for his players, ensuring no one feels insecure, and this quality makes him a better captain and leader than the past skippers.

Notably, Rohit played a fearless brand of cricket at the top of the order, providing aggressive starts to the team without thinking about his stats and led the side from the front in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He finished the tournament with 180 runs across the five games.
The Hitman will be next seen in action in the upcoming IPL 2025, where the Mumbai Indians will play their first game against the Chennai Super Kings on March 23 at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai. He will play for the Mumbai Indians under the star all-rounder Hardik Pandya.
