The Sydney Sixers issued an official statement, stating, “Sydney Sixers international recruit Tom Curran has been ruled out for the remainder of the KFC BBL|13 season, sustaining a knee injury in the Sixers’ last match against the Melbourne Stars on Saturday.” The extent of the injury is currently unknown, and Curran will return to England for further assessments.
Curran’s BBL season was marked by controversy when he got involved in an argument with an official before the Sixers’ match against the Hobart Hurricanes on December 11. The altercation occurred when Curran attempted to finish a practice run-up on the pitch during the warm-up.
The Sydney Sixers appealed the subsequent ban, but the BBL decided to uphold it, leading to Curran missing three matches against the Melbourne Stars, Sydney Thunder, and Brisbane Heat.
After serving his suspension, the 28-year-old all-rounder returned to on-field action on January 3. Despite the controversial incident, BBL general manager Alistair Dobson acknowledged Curran’s remorse but stressed the importance of respecting and appreciating umpires in the game.
“Umpires are part of the lifeblood of cricket, and it is essential they are respected and appreciated by players at all levels of the game. We acknowledge the remorse Tom’s shown following the appeal and look forward to seeing him back in Sixers colors,” said Dobson. He also emphasized that Curran has been a long-time contributor to the BBL and remains a fan favorite, expressing hope for his continued involvement in the competition in the future.
