Tokyo Medalist Lovlina Borgohain Reacts to IOC’s 2028 Olympics Boxing Category Overhaul

Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain may shift to the 70kg category after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) removed her current 75kg division from the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

What Changed?

The IOC announced new Olympic boxing weight classes on Wednesday.

75kg (Middleweight) is gone, forcing Lovlina to choose between:

70kg (Light Middleweight) – cutting weight

+80kg (Heavyweight) – bulking up

Lovlina’s Reaction

“Shocking news! I think I’ll have to move down,” Lovlina said.

Her coach, Pranamika Bora, was also surprised:

“Too early to decide. Tests will determine if weight cutting or bulking is better.”

What’s Next?

Lovlina’s natural weight is 74kg – cutting too much might affect her strength.

She has previously adapted to category changes:

Won Tokyo bronze in 69kg before moving to 75kg for Paris.

Won 2022 Asian gold, 2023 World title, and 2023 Asian Games silver at 75kg.
