Tim Paine hopeful of Indian batter’s potential participation in Border-Gavaskar Trophy | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Former Australia captain Tim Paine expressed his delight at witnessing the return of Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant to action after a prolonged hiatus due to injury.
Pant made his comeback to the field for the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) match against the Punjab Kings (PBKS), prompting Paine to extend his best wishes for Pant’s potential involvement in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
The journey back to cricket for Pant had been filled with obstacles, including a lengthy 14-month recovery period following his injury. On March 23, Pant marked his return during the Delhi Capitals’ encounter against the Punjab Kings.

Despite scoring 18 runs off 13 balls, Pant’s impact surpassed mere statistics, as he showcased his skill with both the bat and the gloves. His agility behind the stumps was evident with a catch and a stumping, signaling a promising return to form.
During an appearance on ESPN’s Around the Wicket, Paine took a trip down memory lane, reflecting on the lively banter he and Pant had exchanged on the field in the past, highlighting that it was all in good spirits. Fondly reminiscing about their interactions, he admitted to relishing Pant’s playing style, drawing parallels between it and his own aspirations as a cricketer.
“It certainly did. A lot has been said about the ordeal he went through and how close he was to losing a leg. Just to see him walk back onto the field, as a cricket fan and as a fan of Rishabh. I know we had our banter back and forth, it was really cheeky and good fun,” said Paine.
“I have always had fun chatting with him off the field, and enjoyed watching him play,” he added.
Despite the competitive nature of their on-field rivalry, Paine openly expressed his admiration for Pant’s significant contributions to the sport. He also conveyed his hope for Pant’s fitness and form ahead of the eagerly awaited Border-Gavaskar Trophy tour later in the year, set to take place from November 22 to January 7.
“He played cricket like I always wanted to. I didn’t have the courage to take the game on or even the skill. I certainly appreciate what he brings to the game, the joy he brings to the Indian cricket team fans. I can’t wait to keep watching him and hopefully, he is fit and well enough to make it to Australian shores for the summer,” said Paine.
