“That’s why he’s performing” – Sanath Jayasuriya reveals secret behind Yashasvi Jaiswal’s exceptional performances

Yashasvi Jaiswal is all set to flex his muscles in the T20I series against Sri Lanka. After sitting out throughout the T20 World Cup, the southpaw will now get his chance with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired.

Sanath Jayasuriya, Sri Lanka’s interim head coach spoke highly of the youngster and various other Indian players. He also spoke about this upcoming series against India and the importance it holds for Sri Lanka.

The Lankans had a torrid T20 World Cup having lost maingames. They made a league-stage exit with Waninsu Hasaranga stepping down as the team’s T20I captain. Charith Asalanka will be leading the side against India.

Meanwhile, in an exclusive interview with Times of India, Sanath Jayasuriya spoke about Yashasvi Jaiswal’s prowess as a batter. Jaiswal after waiting for his chance since the World Cup is all set to get a longer run under Gautam Gambhir in this new era of T20I cricket for India.

“Jaiswal is another great talent from India. He has the passion and the want to do well, and to do that, he has been working very hard. He has made sacrifices and is a dedicated kid, that’s why he is performing. I have heard about his work ethic, and that’s quite impressive. Recently, we had a session with Zubin (Bharucha), the director of high performance at RR, and he told us how hard Jaiswal trains,” stated Jayasuriya, in an exclusive interview with TOI.

Jaiswal is already among the few Indian batters with centuries across formats and looks to start big from the first ball. He has been doing the same in the IPL as well over the last few years. In IPL 2024, he scored 435 runs at an average of 31.07 after a slow start to the season.

He is already past 1000 Test runs in less than 20 innings with a century and a double century to his credit. He made his T20I debut in 2023 scoring 430 runs last year with a century. In 2024 so far, he has scored 213 runs from five matches at a strike rate of 170.

Having started well in the format, he was also included as a backup opener in the T20 World Cup. However, the management decided to open with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. He has already scored 643 runs in the format and a good season this year can see him get to 1000 runs in the format.

Yashasvi Jaiswal Closing In On Big Record

He is closing in on a great record heading into the first T20I against Sri Lanka. He needs just 47 more runs to score 1000 runs in 2024 across formats. In 2024, Yashasvi Jaiswal has scored 953 runs in 16 innings so far. He scored 740 runs in six Tests and smashed 213 runs in five T20Is so far.

The southpaw scored 712 runs in the Test series against England earlier this year where he pummelled the England bowlers. He averaged 89 in the series and scored at a strike rate of 80. He is ahead in the run-getters list from names like Rohit Sharma and Babar Azam.
