The $200,000 New York Breeders’ Futurity at Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack Oct. 16 brings forward a field of seven juveniles contesting six furlongs on the main track, with Bob Baffert’s Tall Paul looking for redemption after finishing third in the Aspirant Stakes Sept. 25.
Tall Paul has yet to finish off the board in three starts for owners Michael E. Pegram, Karl Watson, and Paul Weitman. After finishing third in his debut in California, the Frosted colt scored an empathic victory over state- breds in a Aug. 12 maiden special weight at Saratoga Race Course.
Todd Pletcher trainee Trust Fund will look to get his first stakes win for partners Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Repole Stable following a narrow runner-up effort in the Aspirant. The Practical Joke colt had previously graduated at Saratoga first time out before finishing a lackluster sixth in the Funny Cide Stakes Aug. 27.
The field is completed, in starting order, by Trust Fund with Irad Ortiz Jr. returning to the tack; Tall Paul will again be partnered by Jose Ortiz; Yo Banana Boy makes his second start after finishing second Sept 14 for trainer Destin Heath; Mike Maker will send Mischief Joke , who has not been off the board in his six starts among maiden special weight company; last out third at in the Sept. 25 Lady Finger Stakes Unicorn Cake ; Francis Raia and Debra VanBuren’s Hal Away; and Wesley Ward pupil Watchatalkinabout, third runner up in the Funny Cide.
