Stakes Winners Disarm, Crimson Advocate Win ’24 Debuts

While many observed the racing action at Pimlico Race Course on Preakness Stakes day, May 18, two popular graded stakes winners returned triumphantly elsewhere around the country.

At Churchill Downs in Kentucky, 4-year-old millionaire Disarm —last year’s Matt Winn Stakes (G3) winner—took a $123,820 allowance optional claiming race in his first start since a runner-up finish in the Aug. 26 Travers Stakes (G1). And at Gulfstream Park in Florida, 3-year-old turf sprinter Crimson Advocate —who traveled abroad last summer to win the Queen Mary Stakes (G2) at Royal Ascot—scored by a length in the $81,000 Roar Stakes.

Neither blew away the competition, though each successfully kicked off their 2024 campaigns with fitness-advancing comebacks.

Winchell Thoroughbreds’ Disarm, a homebred son of Gun Runner   trained by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, scored by a length and a half in his 1 1/16-mile race, setting an easy pace under Keith Asmussen and fending off a midstretch bid from stablemate Onthestage . He was timed in 1:45.88 for the distance, a slow time at least partially caused by a dawdling early pace. His final sixteenth of a mile was timed in :05.90. He paid $2.28 to win.

Crimson Advocate, a 3-year-old filly by Nyquist   owned by Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, zipped along at a faster tempo, timed with five furlongs in :54.77 under Edwin Gonzalez. The George Weaver trainee paid $4 to win.

Saturday’s race marked her first start since she was sixth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1T) last year.
