South Africa squad for Tri-nation series in Pakistan announced, Gerald Coetzee returns

South Africa’s squad for the tri-series with hosts Pakistan and New Zealand has been announced. Fast bowler Gerald Coetzee has recovered from the left hamstring injury that he suffered during the Test series against Sri Lanka and is back in the squad.

The squad is announced just for South Africa’s opening match of the tournament as many of the players are involved in the ongoing SA20. The Proteas will play their first match on February 10 against New Zealand in Karachi.

Players will be included after the SA20 Eliminator match between Joburg Super Kings and Sunrisers Eastern Cape on February 5 for the second ODI. More players will join the squad after the SA20 final.

South Africa announce squad for tri-series

The squad has six uncapped players out of the twelve that have been selected so far. But that is mainly due to the players’ commitment to their respective franchises in the SA20. Once the tournament gets over, the first-choice players are expected to return.

Among the uncapped players are the batter Meeka-eel Prince, fast bowlers Gideon Peters and Eathan Bosch, and allrounder Mihlali Mpongwana. Matthew Breetzke and Senuran Muthusamy are have also found a place in the squad. Both are capped international players but are yet to play an ODI.

Keshav Maharaj and Heinrich Klaasen, both of whom were the part of Pretoria Capitals in this year’s SA20, have been rested for the first match but will be available from the second one. The squad for the rest of the series will be announced on February 9 after the conclusion of SA20 final.

No big players for South Africa

In another big news, some big players of South Afica’s squad for the Champions Trophy won’t play any part in this tri-series. Those players are Marco Jansen, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, and Rassie van der Dussen.

All these players have been rested and the team manegement wants them fresh for the Champions Trophy. These players were key for their respective teams in the SA20. All of them will leave for Pakistan on February 14, when the tri-series final will be played.

It is an important series for South Africa as they prepare for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 which will be played on the same grounds as well. All the three participating teams will be looking to get acclimatised to the conditions which will help them prepare for the tournament.

South Africa are in Group B in the Champions Trophy alongside Australia, England, and Afghanistan. They will open their campaign against Afghanistan in Karachi on February 21.
