Las Vegas, NV – The Grade 3 Shuvee Handicap goes down at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York this Saturday, July 20. Fillies and mares three years old and upward will take to Saratoga’s dirt track and go 1 1/8 miles for a purse of $200,000.
A strong field of seven females will line up in the Shuvee Handicap – race 9 on Saratoga’s Saturday schedule. Post time is 5:12 PM. Here is a brief glance into the past performances of all seven combatants for this Grade 3 stakes – two of which are cross entered in the Grade 1 Delaware Handicap that same day.
Authenticity – Todd Pletcher trained mare made her stakes debut and finished a good second in the Grade 3 Rampart Stakes behind Ciao Bella at Gulfstream March 30 after two wins, a second and a third place finish in five career starts – the only out-of-the-money finish came in her debut. Last time out was a very nice second in the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps Handicap at Belmont Park May 27 after a true breakthrough performance – a win in the Grade 2 La Troienne Stakes at Churchill Downs May 3. She has alternated wins and seconds in her last four starts – if the pattern holds true Authenticity is due for a win! She is cross entered in the Delaware Handicap but is the morning line favorite at 7-5 odds.
Summer Applause – has recorded five wins, and two seconds in 11 career starts and has won two of her last three starts – the Grade 3 Distaff Stakes May 18 at Pimlico and the Grade 2 Top Flight Handicap at Aqueduct in March. Sandwiched in there is a fourth in the Grade 1 Apple Blossom in April. She was sixth in the inaugural Houston Ladies Classic Stakes at Sam Houston January 26 to start her year after a fourth in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks and a second in the Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks. She has looked terrific in the lead-up to the Shuvee for trainer Chad Brown and should be near the top again Saturday. She is also cross entered in the Delaware Handicap but is the morning line second choice at 2-1 odds.
Eblouissante – has just two career starts for trainer John Sherreffs and has won both – an Allowance Optional Claiming last time out at Santa Anita and a MSW at Hollywood Park in November by an impressive 4 1/4 lengths. She is certainly lightly races and inexperienced but has been at the top of both her career starts. She’s a contender and the 4-1 third choice – especially if the two favorites opt to race in Delaware.
Sea Island – Shug McGaughey trained filly had a good string of four second place finishes starting in the winter and lasting until the spring including the Grade 1 Gazelle Stakes at Aqueduct in November and the Grade 3 Distaff Stakes at Pimlico May 18. Last time out was a disappointment however – a sixth in the minor Mariensky Stakes at Belmont Park June 7. Sea Island has just three wins but six seconds in 14 career starts. She is 10-1 on the morning line and will be looking to bounce back from a miserable performance last time out.

Flashy American – will be making her graded stakes debut Saturday but is coming off a win in her stakes debut – the Iowa Distaff Stakes at Prairie Meadows June 28. She has five wins, two seconds and two third place finishes in 19 career starts for trainer Kenneth McPeek.
Royal Lahaina – raced in stakes company for the first time April 20 in the Grade 3 Sixty Sails Handicap and finished fifth for her worst effort in a while. Before that effort was three straight Allowance Optional Claiming scores at Aqueduct – the last being March 29 and the others coming February 15 and December 14. Last time out she returned to her winning ways with a nice score in the minor Mariensky Stakes at Belmont Park June 7. She has six wins, four seconds and two third place finishes in her 21 career starts.
Moon Philly – had a nice streak of four wins and three seconds in seven races in the fall and winter including wins in the minor Nellie Morse Racing Media Stakes and the Maryland Racing Media Stakes but has struggled a tad in her last two starts. She was fifth in the Grade 3 Distaff Stakes at Pimlico in May and followed that with another fifth last time out in the minor Lighthouse Stakes at Monmouth Park June 30.
