I think he practiced enough – Shubman Gill on Rohit Sharma’s
India captain Rohit did not attend the pre-match press conference ahead of the Brisbane Test. Instead, the team management sent the youngster Gill to interact with the media.
Also, he was not seen in the practice session of the team just a day before the crucial match. Shubman Gill was asked about the absence of Rohit Sharma, and the white-ball vice-captain revealed that the veteran batter had already practiced enough for the match; hence, he decided to skip the optional practice session to keep himself fresh for the game.
“Yeah, this was an optional practice session and I think he practiced enough,” the India National Cricket Team batter Shubman Gill said.
Notably, Rohit Sharma has been going through a lean patch in Test cricket and hasn’t fired in his last 6 Test matches. In the matches against Bangladesh, he registered scores of 6, 5, 23, and 8 and then followed it up with scores of 2, 52, 0, 8, 18 and 11 in the New Zealand series. Also, in the Adelaide Test, he scored 3 and 6 runs across two innings.
Definitely, I feel pretty confident playing here – Shubman Gill
Gill was one of the heroes of India’s historic Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21 win and he played a key role in the Brisbane Test victory. Talking about playing at the venue again, Gill said that he is high on confidence. He said:
“Definitely very nostalgic when I came here. Just walking through the stadium again after the 2021 win felt very nostalgic. Definitely, I feel pretty confident playing here.”
Gill further revealed that captain Rohit Sharma has high expectations from the batting order ahead of the third Test after the failure in the pink-ball Test. He said:
“We are looking to post a big total first up. We are a bit more used to playing with the red ball in the day.”
Yes, while I am batting I’ve felt good – Shubman Gill
The right-handed batter missed the Perth Test due to a thumb injury but recovered quickly and featured in the Adelaide Test, where he scored 31 and 28 runs, respectively.
Talking about his performance so far, Gill said that he has felt good and enjoyed his time in the middle.
“Yes, while I am batting I’ve felt good. In the first innings, I was affected by what happened on the other end, I went into my shell and missed a straight one.
“In the second innings, all of us found it difficult to spot the ball and its seam position. Generally, as a batter, you are better when you can spot the seam. I found that difficult to spot, but whatever time I’ve spent at the crease so far, I’ve enjoyed it to the core.”
