At one point, it looked like the total was going to be 220-230 – Shubman Gill

GT won the toss and opted to bowl first in the match. They kept picking up wickets at regular intervals and reduced the Delhi Capitals to 203/8. Prasidh Krishna emerged as the top performer for GT as he bagged four wickets.

Chasing the target, Shubman Gill got run out early, but Jos Buttler (97*), Sherfane Rutherford (43), Sai Sudharsan (36), and Rahul Tewatia (11*) played great innings and helped GT complete the run-chase in 19.2 overs.

During the post-match presentation ceremony, GT skipper Shubman Gill lauded his bowlers for pulling things back very well because at a point in time, DC were eyeing 220-230 runs. Shubman Gill said:

“At one point, it looked like the total was going to be 220-230. The way we pulled back, credit to the bowlers. Even in the first game, chasing around 245, we were right in the game, lost by just 10 runs.”

Disappointing way to get out – Shubman Gill on his run-out

Shubman Gill further expressed confidence in his team’s ability to win the competition, saying that they have been chasing and defending very well. Gill said:

“We’ve been chasing well, we’ve been defending well. They were ahead in the game, with Axar batting, it was difficult to hit the fast bowlers, so we thought we’ll continue with them.”

Shubman Gill, however, was disappointed with the way he got run out in the match and lauded Jos Buttler as well as Sherfane Rutherford for their heroics with the bat.

“Disappointing way to get out (run-out), but we’ve got plenty of games here and hopefully will get my chance. Magnificent the way Butter and Rutherford rotated strike and those hits were tremendous. It was not just brutal hitting, it was very calculated batting, it was a treat to watch. Very happy to get this win,” Shubman Gill said.

How did GT perform in the previous IPL match against DC?

Gujarat Titans (GT) put up a good fight in their previous match against Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on April 24 in IPL 2024 but faced a 4-run loss in the high-scoring thriller.

Opting to bowl first, the Gujarat Titans didn’t have a good outing as the Delhi Capitals piled up a huge score of 224/4. Sandeep Warrier emerged as the top bowler for GT in the innings as he bowled a brilliant spell of 3/15 in his three overs, while Noor Ahmad was the only other wicket-taker in the innings.

Chasing the target, they got off to a poor start as captain Shubman Gill departed for just 6 runs. However, Wriddhiman Saha (39 off 25) and Sai Sudharsan (65 off 39) brought stability to the innings with their brilliant batting performance, and they reached 95/2 in under 10 overs.

However, the innings soon got off track as GT lost quick wickets, including the dismissals of Azmatullah Omarzai, Shahrukh Khan, and Rahul Tewatia. David Miller then reignited the chase with a brilliant 55 off just 23 deliveries. However, after his dismissal Gujarat Titans were unable to cross the finish line despite Rashid Khan’s (21* off 11) fireworks and got restricted to 220/8.
