Shreyas Iyer promises to hit a 100 in the next IPL 2025 match after being stranded on 97

Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer batted like a dream in his team’s opening match of IPL 2025 against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad. It was also Iyer’s debut innings with the new franchise, and he played a perfect knock for his side.

After the match, Shreyas Iyer shed light on his knock and spoke about missing out on a well-deserved century. The PBKS captain also hailed the late cameo from Shashank Singh, whose knock proved to be the difference in the end.

Shreyas Iyer breaks silence on missing out on a hundred

In a video posted by the Indian Premier League’s X (formerly Twitter) handle after the match in Ahmedabad, Shreyas Iyer was asked about missing out on his maiden IPL hundred as he fell short by just three runs. However, he is not bothered about it and is confident of reaching the milestone in the next game.

“I will get it (hundred) in the next match,” Iyer remarked.

Shreyas Iyer was in scintillating form with the bat as he struck form in just the first game of IPL 2025. Batting at No. 3, he started aggressively and didn’t bother to slow down at any point.

As Punjab lost the wickets of Azmatullah Omarzai and Glenn Maxwell in quick succession, Iyer tried to play out a few silent overs without taking many risks. However, he continued his aggressive intent after settling down again and smashed the bowlers all around the park.

He remained unbeaten on 97 off just 42 balls, thus falling just three runs short of the hundred. The right-hander didn’t even get the strike in the final over of the innings as his batting partner, Shashank Singh, kept smashing the ball to all parts of the ground.

Shreyas Iyer on partnership with Shashank Singh

Shreyas Iyer also spoke about his partnership with Shashank Singh, as both of them focused on scoring as many runs as possible. Iyer revealed that he asked Shashank to go for big shots on every ball without even thinking about his ton.

“The interaction we had in the middle was to post a massive total on the board because we knew Gujarat Titans had a solid batting lineup, and in IPL, it’s not over until it’s over. I just asked him to go for big shots, don’t look at my hundred, I will get it in the next match,” Iyer added.

Iyer and Shashank added 81 runs in just 4.4 overs to take the Kings to a match-winning total. Shashank added 23 runs off the final over bowled by Mohammed Siraj as Punjab scored 243-5 in 20 overs.

Gujarat Titans fight but fall short

In reply, Gujarat Titans gave it their all, but the target of 244 was always going to be difficult. All of their top four batters made significant contributions, but they fell 11 runs short of the target and finished on 232-5.

Sai Sudharsan top-scored for Titans with 74 off just 41 balls. Skipper Shubman Gill scored a fiery 33 off just 14 balls but was unable to carry on for long. Jos Buttler scored 54 off 33 balls while batting at No. 3, while Sherfane Rutherford smashed a quickfire 46 down the order.
