Former Indian captain and BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has hailed Shreyas Iyer as the most improved batter over the past year after his remarkable innings for Punjab Kings in their IPL 2025 opener against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Highlighting the rapid progress of Shreyas Iyer, who played a key role in India’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 triumph in international cricket, Sourav Ganguly lauded the Punjab Kings captain’s growth and expressed confidence in his ability to excel across all three formats of the game for the India National Cricket Team.
On March 25, the right-handed batter played a match-winning knock of unbeaten 97 off just 42 balls, featuring five fours and nine sixes against the Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium. His remarkable knock powered PBKS to a formidable total of 243.
In response, Gujarat Titans fell short by 11 runs, finishing at 232/5 as PBKS kicked off their campaign with a thrilling 11-run victory at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Ganguly believes that Iyer has worked on his weaknesses and has developed into a complete batter, making him a strong contender for India in all three formats of the game. His recent performances reflect his adaptability and consistency, proving his worth on the big stage.
Taking to X, Ganguly shared his views by saying, “Shreyas Iyer is the most improved batsman in the last year… ready for all formats. Great to see his improvement after a few issues on length.”

It was a knock of the highest standard: Kane Williamson hails Shreyas Iyer
Meanwhile, Kane Williamson showered rich praise on Iyer for his adaptability. He said on JioStar, “What stands out about Shreyas is how he continues to evolve his game. For a period, teams targeted him with short balls, but now he’s adjusting brilliantly—getting deeper in his crease, de-weighting his front leg, and dominating the short-pitched deliveries.”
He added, “It was a knock of the highest standard. From the very first ball, it was almost a highlight reel—he played the ball exactly where it was meant to be hit. Anything outside off stump, he looked to access the offside, and he even struck sixes over cover against some of the best seamers in the world. Then, to take on Rashid Khan as well—that’s one of the toughest challenges in the game.”
