Shreyas Iyer draws huge interest from franchises for his leadership post-KKR exit

Shreyas Iyer is looking destined to cause a bidding war in the upcoming IPL 2025 auction. The batting star was a part of the Kolkata Knight Riders camp for the last three seasons before being released ahead of the mega auction.

Even though he led the Knight Riders to the title in 2024, he was not retained. Later, Knight Riders CEO Venky Mysore stated that although the franchise wanted to retain their captain, he did not want to be retained. Mysore said that Iyer wanted to take part in the auction.

While only time will tell how big a contract Iyer earns in the upcoming auction, recent reports state that the batting star is attracting a lot of interest. Several leading franchises are eyeing Iyer in the auction. According to a report in the Times of India, the franchises want to sign up Iyer for his leadership qualities.

Shreyas Iyer’s IPL career so far:

Iyer’s journey in the IPL began in 2015 when he was signed up by Delhi Capitals. In his debut season with the Delhi-based franchise, he played in all 14 league games and scored 439 runs with the help of 4 half-centuries.

In the second season, he played only 6 games and scored 30 runs. He scored more than 300 runs in 2017 before being appointed the captain in 2018 when Gautam Gambhir stepped down as the captain midway through the season.

Under his captaincy, Delhi Capitals won four games and lost as many games. In 2019, he was announced as Delhi Capitals’ permanent captain. The Shreyas Iyer-led side finished third in the points table and qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2012. Their journey ended with a loss against Chennai Super Kings in the second qualifier.
