Watch: Huge blow for Sunrisers Hyderabad as Mohammed Shami suffers injury scare

Mohammed Shami joined the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) after his release from the Gujarat Titans (GT) as the Hyderabad-based franchise roped him in at the IPL 2025 mega auction for INR 10 crore

Shami started off his campaign with the new franchise on a decent note. While defending 287, Shami got the new ball, and he gave away 16 runs in the first over and 10 runs in the second over.

He bagged his first wicket of the season in his third over as he dismissed Nitish Rana and gave away just 7 runs. He registered the figure of 1/33 in the powerplay.

Meanwhile, an unfortunate incident happened with Shami in the 12th over of the innings and he wasn’t able to bowl his final over.

On the 5th ball of the 12th over, Pat Cummins bowled a 110.5 kmph delivery to Sanju Samson, who shuffled to swing across the line. He was early into his shot, and the ball hit him high on the bat. The ball went in the air towards the short fine leg, where Mohammed Shami stuck his left hand out and failed to hold onto the catch.

After the ball hit his hand, Mohammed Shami looked in some pain and instantly left the field to get some treatment. SRH would be hoping that his injury is not serious as him missing matches would be a big blow for the team.

What Happened in the Previous IPL Match Between RR and SRH?

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) bagged a 36-run victory over Rajasthan Royals (RR) in their previous IPL match, which was Qualifier 2 of the 2024 season in Chennai.

Batting first, SRH posted a good total of 175/9 on the board in 20 overs, with crucial contributions from Rahul Tripathi (37 off 15), Travis Head (34 off 28), and Heinrich Klaasen (50 off 34). The rest of the batting unit was not able to do a good job in the match.

For Rajasthan Royals, Trent Boult (3/45) and Avesh Khan (3/27) were standout bowlers and they disturbed SRH’s momentum in the middle overs. Also, Sandeep Sharma provided them with great support with his 2-wicket haul.

While chasing the total, RR struggled against SRH’s disciplined bowling attacks. Despite a brisk 42 off 21 balls from the young opening batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal and a fighting unbeaten 56 from Dhruv Jurel, RR could only manage 139/7 in their 20 overs, which resulted in a disappointing defeat for them.

Sunrisers Hyderabad entered the match as favorites

Speaking on ESPNCricinfo ahead of the Indian Premier League 2025 match between SRH and RR, the former India pacer Varun Aaron said that the Sunrisers Hyderabad would be the favorites to win the match. He said:

” I think Sunrisers will be favourites especially with the way Rajasthan have lost a bulk of their team they’ve lost Jos Butler. Jos Butler is a big loss for Rajasthan. He was their go-to man. He was the answer to everything for Rajasthan Royals for a very long period of time, so they’re definitely going to miss him, and I would favor SRH for this game.”
