Sanju Samson becomes 2nd batter to bag 5 ducks in T20Is in a calendar year

After the highs of the consecutive T20I tons, Sanju Samson hit new lows in South Africa. He started off the series with an epic century but then bagged a duck in the second T20I.

India would have expected Sanju Samson to bounce back in the third T20I, but the wicketkeeper-batsman once again failed miserably.

On the second ball of the first over, Marco Jansen bowled a good length delivery to Samson. The Indian batter stayed rooted to the crease, and the ball sneaked through his bat to hit the top of the off-stump.

Notably, Samson expected the ball to bounce more, but it kept a tad low and skidded off the surface. Jansen was absolutely thrilled after picking a wicket and celebrated aggressively.

With his second consecutive duck in the South Africa T20I series, Sanju Samson became just the second batter from a full-member nation to record five ducks in a calendar year in T20I cricket after Zimbabwe’s Regis Chakabva.

Among Indians, Sanju Samson holds the record for most ducks (5) in T20I cricket in a calendar year, and he is followed by Yusuf Pathan, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli in the list, all of whom bagged 3 ducks in a calendar year.

Overall, Rohit Sharma has bagged the most ducks for India (12), and Virat Kohli, with 7 ducks, is at the no.2 position. Samson has now jumped to the third spot with 6 ducks. Among Indian wicketkeeper-batsmen, Samson jumped past Rishabh Pant (4) to become the player with the most ducks.

India batters struggled in Gqeberha T20I

India’s batters faltered under pressure in the second T20I, struggling to play well against South Africa’s bowling lineup.

Right from the start, things went south for India. Sanju Samson, who hit two consecutive T20I tons in previous matches and was expected to get them off to a brisk start, fell for a duck within the first three balls, bowled by Marco Jansen. Soon after, Abhishek Sharma’s (4 off 5) struggles continued as he joined Samson back in the dugout, leaving India reeling at 5/2.

Captain Suryakumar Yadav also couldn’t get going. He scratched his way to 4 off 9 balls before Simelane trapped him lbw. The early losses forced Tilak Varma (20 off 20) and Axar Patel to slow down. Tilak’s struggle for momentum ended with an outrageous catch from David Miller off Aiden Markram, leaving India at a dire 45/4 by the eighth over.

Axar Patel showed some fight, scoring 27 off 21 balls, but he fell victim to an unfortunate run-out. Hardik Pandya was India’s last hope and he tried to smash boundaries, continuously denying strike to Arshdeep Singh, but only managed an unbeaten 39 off 45. In the end, India managed a below-par 124/6 at the end of 20 overs, which cost them the match.
