RP Singh criticizes Sam Curran’s handling of Arshdeep Singh in IPL 2024; shares WC success plan

Former Indian pacer RP Singh opened up about Arshdeep Singh’s role in the team for the upcoming T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the United States of America (USA). RP Singh highlighted that Arshdeep Singh wasn’t used properly by the Punjab Kings (PBKS) stand-in skipper Sam Curran in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.

Arshdeep Singh was included in the 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup among three pacers. The left-arm pacer picked up 19 wickets in the IPL 2024 at an average of 26.57 and an expensive economy rate of 10.03. Arshdeep was the seventh-leading wicket-taker in the recently concluded tournament.

The Rohit Sharma-led team will face Ireland in their opening match at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on Wednesday, June 5. The Men in Blue will face archrivals Pakistan in their next match at the same venue on Sunday, June 9. Team India will play all four group-stage matches in the USA.

Arshdeep Singh Hasn’t Been Used Properly – RP Singh

RP Singh suggested that Arshdeep Singh’s success could come from bowling just short of a good length with variations, particularly slower deliveries, and cutters, considering the likely slower pitches in New York for the morning matches.

“Arshdeep, if I see his IPL performance, he hasn’t been used properly. Utilisation of bowlers also depends on how captain sees him and what kind of conditions are there in the offing, the lengths that he needs to bowl,” RP Singh said, as quoted by PTI.

“A 10:30 am start in New York, the pitches will be on slower side, the ideal way should be to bowl just short of good length and variations, I feel there will be lot of slowers and cutters and if Arshdeep uses slowers and cutters, his success rate will be high in World Cup,” he added.

Arshdeep Singh made his T20I debut against England on July 7, 2022. He was India’s top wicket-taker in the 2022 T20 World Cup. The pacer secured 10 wickets in six matches with an average of 15.60 and an impressive economy rate of 7.80. Singh is also the fastest Indian pacer to reach 50 T20I wickets.

Rohit Sharma To Lead Team India In T20 World Cup 2024

Rohit Sharma will captain Team India, featuring renowned players such as Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, and Suryakumar Yadav in the batting lineup. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shivam Dube have earned their maiden call-ups for the T20 World Cup from the selection committee.

Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel have been chosen as the spin-bowling all-rounders, with Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav as the primary spinners in the 15-member squad. Ace bowler Jasprit Bumrah will lead the pace department, comprising Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Siraj.

The Indian team will miss the services of veteran pacer Mohammed Shami, who is injured, in the World Cup. The selectors didn’t pick a fourth pacer in the team, and Hardik Pandya will have to bowl in the tournament as an additional pace-bowling option.
