Las Vegas, NV – Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario will be the scene of the Grade 3 Royal North Stakes this Sunday, July 28. Fillies and mares three years old and upward will be featured as they take to the track and sprint six furlongs on Woodbine’s turf track for their share of the $150,000 purse.
The Royal North has drawn a field of seven older females to go in race 8 on Woodbine’s Sunday card. Post time is 4:24 PM. Let’s take a look into the past performances of all eight entries for this Grade 3 stakes.
Roxie Gap – Two-time Sovereign Award winner as Canada`s outstanding older female Roxy Gap, the defending champion in this race makes her first start of 2013 Sunday for trainer Mark Casse. She ended her 2012 campaign in disappointing fashion – an eighth in the Grade 3 Bessarabian Stakes November 24 after a third in the Grade 3 Ontario Fashion Stakes three weeks earlier. She placed in eight of nine starts in 2012 however including three graded stakes wins and will be looking to start a new impressive streak Sunday, She has apparently looked good in her few workouts ahead of the Royal North.
Sensible Lady – Maryland shipper has 17 career starts with nine wins and four third place finishes and enters having won two straight minor stakes races – the Buckland Stakes (for the second year in a row) at Colonial Downs June 29 and the Very One Stakes at Pimlico May 17. She also won three minor stakes races last summer. She is no stranger to stakes action but Sunday marks her graded stakes debut as the highweight in the Royal North. She is used to being at or near the top and Sunday should be no different.
Heavenly Pride – finished a nice second on this track June 1 for her best ever result in the Grade 3 Hendrie and went on to a third in the minor Sweet Briar Too Stakes July 6. She has 23 career starts with six wins, four seconds and four thirds and has looked good in her recent step up in competition. She looks for her first graded stakes score Sunday.
Why Katherine – Kevin Attard trained filly has six starts in 2013 with three wins and two second place finishes. She enters the Royal North having finished second in two straight races including the minor Zadacarta Stakes in her stakes debut here last time out and having won the two start prior to that. She has 12 career starts with three wins and three seconds and is obviously in the best form of her career ahead of this weekend.

She was out of action nearly nine months and returned June 15 with an Allowance Optional Claiming score.
Little River – finished a disappointing eighth last time out in the Grade 3 Hendrie Stakes June 1 – her stakes debut. Before that was an Allowance score at Woodbine May 5 and a second in a similar race in April at Keeneland. She has six career starts with two wins and two second place finishes.
