Pant, who made his international debut under Virat Kohli in 2017, has also had the privilege of playing alongside the iconic Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Reflecting on his journey, Pant emphasized the value of learning from various leaders.
“Yes, I’ve learned from a lot of captains and many senior players because I believe leadership lessons are not confined to captains alone,” Pant said after being named LSG captain. “There’s so much to gain from experienced players and the way they approach the evolving game.”
Pant particularly highlighted the influence of Rohit, noting the importance of care and trust in leadership.
“With Rohit bhai, I’ve learned how to care for a player, and that resonates with my own philosophy as a captain,” he explained. “When you give confidence and trust to a player, he can achieve things beyond imagination for the team.”
Pant, who became the most expensive player in IPL history when LSG acquired him for Rs 27 crore, shared his vision for the team.
“We’ll back the players, instill trust, and maintain clear communication,” said Pant, who has previous captaincy experience with Delhi Capitals (DC).
Last season, Pant led DC with determination, scoring 446 runs to emerge as the team’s top scorer. However, the franchise fell short of expectations, finishing sixth and missing the playoffs.
Pant stressed the importance of fostering a “never-say-die” attitude within the LSG squad.
“Performance may come and go, but what matters is your fight. Are you giving 100% on the field? Everyone gets tired, but it’s about pushing that extra 20-30% for the team. That’s the culture we want to build.”
The 25-year-old will also reunite with former India pace legend Zaheer Khan, who mentored him during his IPL debut in 2016. Zaheer now takes on the role of LSG mentor, succeeding Gautam Gambhir.
As LSG embarks on this new journey under Pant’s leadership, his vision of trust, resilience, and character promises to shape a team ready to fight till the last ball.
