Ricky Ponting blames IPL for India’s struggles against spin in a bold take

Former Australia National Cricket Team batter Ricky Ponting lavished rich praise on the New Zealand National Cricket Team for their terrific performances in the Test series against the India National Cricket Team. He said that it was a huge result, especially in the absence of their premier batter Kane Williamson.

New Zealand National Cricket Team did what others couldn’t as they thumped India National Cricket Team in a Test series at home. They completely dominated the hosts as they won the series by 3-0 and became the first-ever team to whitewash India at home.

New Zealand beat India by 3-0 in Test series

Ahead of the Test series against the India National Cricket Team, no one gave the New Zealand National Cricket Team a chance, especially with Kane Williamson being injured. However, they stood tall against all the odds and went on to script history on Indian soil, beating the Rohit Sharma-led side in all three games.

New Zealand started the series with a massive 8-wicket win at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Following that, they came up with a superlative effort in Pune as they won the game by 113 runs. They then made sure they ended the series on high as they won the last match by 25 runs.

It’s starting to highlight India’s vulnerability against good quality spin bowling – Ricky Ponting

Ricky Ponting called New Zealand’s Test series win a huge result and admitted that he didn’t expect them to perform this way. He believes that India’s loss in the series highlighted their vulnerability against good-quality spin bowling. Speaking on ICC Review, he explained:

“That’s a huge result. One that I wasn’t expecting, to be honest, more so, when you look at it with Kane Williamson not being there. When you think about his (Williamson’s) record in the subcontinent, the sort of the rock and the leader that he’s been for that team.”

“I think the one thing it does probably say is it’s starting to highlight India’s vulnerability against good quality spin bowling. It seems as though the skill of the modern Indian batsmen of playing spin is probably not what it used to be.”

They’re playing on different wickets in India that are probably for the fast bowlers a bit more – Ricky Ponting

Ricky Ponting further, while talking about the struggles of Indian batters against spin, said that it is because they are playing on different tracks now. He believes that India is not playing as much spin bowling as they did. He added:

“Maybe because they’re playing on different wickets in India that are probably for the fast bowlers a bit more, maybe because there are more high-quality fast bowlers in India now that they’re not playing as much spin bowling as they did.”

“Maybe it’s the IPL or how much IPL cricket they’re playing that the younger players are learning the game that way rather than the way that players did 15 or 20 years ago,” concluded Ricky Ponting.
