Recalcitrant First Winner for California Stallion Pavel

Recalcitrant  became the first winner for freshman sire Pavel  when she took a California-bred $61,500 maiden special weight race by 4 1/4 lengths at Santa Anita Park May 20.

The Reddam Racing homebred trained by Doug O’Neill, led from start to finish in the 4 1/2-furlong dirt race, timed in :52.80 under Mario Gutierrez on a fast track. She returned $3.40 to win after having been second in her debut April 29 at Santa Anita.

Pushiness , the morning-line favorite, was scratched.

Pavel also raced for the same connections as Recalcitrant, winner of the 2018 Stephen Foster Handicap (G1) at Churchill Downs in his top achievement. The former also won a maiden race at Santa Anita and the Smarty Jones Stakes (G3) at Parx Racing as a 3-year-old in 2017. The son of Creative Cause   retired from racing in 2019 with a 3-1-2 record in 18 starts with earnings of over $2 million.

Pavel entered stud in 2020 and stands this year for an advertised fee of $4,000 at Ocean Breeze Ranch in Bonsall, Calif.

Reddam Racing also campaigned Recalcitrant’s dam, the Square Eddie  mare Hacktivism , who won two of 11 starts for trainer Ben Cecil.

She is the second winner out of Hacktivism, following three-race winner Hacking it Up  (Nyquist  ), who took the April 30 Silky Sullivan Stakes vs. California-breds at Golden Gate Fields.
