A power outage at Saratoga Race Course forced the New York Racing Association to eventually cancel the fifth race Aug. 9, the 20th day of the 40-day meet.
The outage was not just at the track. Apparently a tree fell somewhere on Union Avenue, the street the race track is on, and affected other properties in the area.
According to a tweet from Pat McKenna, NYRA’s vice president of communications, the power went out at 3:19 p.m. ET, which was seven minutes before the fifth race was scheduled to run.
It was then canceled when it became uncertain when the power would come back on.
“(Power was) substantially restored at 4:01 p.m. with various critical systems brought back online for race six to go at 4:31 p.m.,” McKenna tweeted.

The fifth race was the second race on the 10-race card that was canceled. It had been announced on Monday that the first race, a steeplechase event, was called off because of a wet turf course. All races scheduled for the grass Aug. 9 were taken off.
The fifth was also to be the start of the pick-6 and that wager was refunded. In other multiple bet wagers, the fifth was an all-win.
