Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has made a stunning revelation about the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, after the team’s disappointing performance in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Afridi revealed that Mohsin Naqvi himself admitted to having no knowledge of the sport.
Mohsin Naqvi, who is Pakistan’s interior minister, took over the charge of the Pakistan Cricket Board as chairman early last year. During his tenure, Pakistan hosted the first ICC tournament in 29 years. However, the Men in Green suffered one of their worst periods in cricketing history in the last two years.
Mohsin Naqvi Doesn’t Know Anything About Cricket – Shahid Afridi
Speaking about his recent meeting with Mohsin Naqvi on Samaa TV, Shahid Afridi said that Naqvi put effort into improving stadium infrastructure. However, Afridi added that he should work alongside experienced professionals in cricket.
“I met the chairman sahab a few days ago in Lahore. The initiative about the grounds, the work done at the Gadaffi stadium, is pretty good and pretty beautiful. He has worked, and he wants to work further,” Afridi said on Samaa TV.
“But he also says that he doesn’t know anything about cricket. When you don’t know cricket then you should work with good, technical people who have some connection with the sport,” he added.
What Is Their Relation with Cricket? – Shahid Afridi
Shahid Afridi blamed the lack of experienced professionals for the decline in the national team’s performance. He also called for urgent reforms in Pakistan’s domestic cricket structure.
“The faces we are seeing in the selection committee and directors, they don’t know cricket, they have all been bureaucrats. What is their relation with cricket? Why are they sitting in the selection committee? Why are they running the domestic cricket system?” asked Afridi.
“Everyone’s seeing the Pakistan team. You should strengthen the domestic cricket structure. If the guardian is good, the child will automatically be good,” he added.
Pakistan Endure Disastrous Campaign in ICC Champions Trophy 2025
Pakistan had a disastrous campaign in the Champions Trophy. The Mohammad Rizwan-led team finished at the bottom of Group A after heavy defeats to New Zealand and India. This marked their third consecutive first-round exit in an ICC tournament, following the 2023 ODI World Cup and 2024 T20 World Cup.
Pakistan cricket has seen several changes in leadership within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in recent years. The team’s preparations and selections for the Champions Trophy 2025 have come under heavy criticism. The Men in Green entered the 50-over tournament with only one frontline spinner, Abrar Ahmed.
Pakistan are set to tour New Zealand for a white-ball series comprising five T20Is and three ODIs. Salman Ali Agha has replaced Mohammad Rizwan as T20I captain. Babar Azam and Rizwan have been left out of the T20I squad. The five-match T20I series will commence at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on March 16.
