Las Vegas, NV – Woodbine in Toronto, Ontario will play host to the biggest race of the weekend – the Grade 1 Pattison Canadian International Stakes on Sunday, October 19. Horses three years old and upward will take to Woodbine’s main track and go 1 1/2 miles searching for the winner’s share of the very nice $1 million purse.
A competitive field of 10 will line up and go after the lucrative prize Sunday – the Pattison Canadian International is race 6 on Woodbine’s busy Sunday card. Post time is 3:32 PM. Here is a look into the past performances of all 10 entries for Canada’s richest race.
Brown Panther – terrific British bred world travelling entry has 24 career starts with 10 wins, four seconds and three third place finishes – he has placed in all six starts this year (three wins, a second and two third place finishes). He recorded a second in the Group 2 Prix Maurice de Nieuil Stakes in July which was followed by a third place finish and a win last time out – the Group 1 Irish St. Leger at Curragh September 14 at 14-1 odds. Brown Panther enters this week in the best form of his career for his North American debut. He will line up in gate 2 with Richard Kingscote in the saddle as the 2-1 morning line favorite.
Big Blue Kitten – two-time Grade 1 winner won the Grade 1 United Nations Stakes at Monmouth Park last July 6 and went on to a disappointing eighth in the Breeders’ Cup Turf after a good second behind Little Mike in the 2014 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic and a win in the Grade 1 Sword Dancer at Saratoga August 17. Big Blue Kitten returned to the track after nine months away August 2 and won the minor Lure Stakes at Saratoga and followed that with a second in the Grade 3 Cliff Hanger Stakes at Monmouth Park August 24. Last time out was a close fourth in the Grade 1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic September 27. He has 11 wins, four seconds and four third place finishes in 22 career starts and has placed in nine of his last 11 races. Joel Rosario gets the call aboard the 3-1 morning line second choice and field’s leading money winner from post 9 Sunday.
Hillstar – 2013 group 2 King Edwards VII stakes winner in England has posted four second place finishes and a win last time in a Group 3 race at Newbury on September 20 in his last five starts overall after a disappointing fourteenth in the Group 1 UAE Derby in March. His leadup to that race wasn’t all that great either. Since Meydan, Hillstar has really picked up his game and enters this weekend in the best form of his career. He has 14 career starts with three wins, six seconds and a third place finish and hopes for a breakthrough win in his first North American start. Ryan Moore has the mount from gate 7 at 5-1 on the morning line.
The Pizza Man – impressive gelding had been on fire before a fifth as favorite in the Grade 1 Northern Dancer Turf Stakes last time out on this track September 14. Before that result was five straight stakes wins including the minor American St. Legere Stakes August 16, the Grade 3 Stars and Stripes Stakes July 12 and the minor Black Tie Affair Stakes in June – all at Arlington to go along with two minor stakes scores to end his 2013 campaign. The Pizza Man has 12 wins, a second and a third place finish and looks to bounce back from an uncharacteristic performance. Florent Geroux gets the call from gate 2 at 6-1 odds.

War Dancer – Kenneth McPeek trained colt has 16 career starts with four wins, three seconds and three third place finishes. He won the Grade 2 Virginia Derby July 13 of last year. In 2014 War Dancer has seven starts with varying results – a seventh in the Grade 3 Skip Away Stakes and a sixth in an Allowance Optional Claiming March 1 started his year off slowly. But he has come around of late – a third behind Finnegan’s Wake in the Grade 3 Arlington Handicap followed a nice win in the 1 1/2 mile Grade 3 Louisville Handicap May 24 and a good second in the Grade 2 Dixiana Elkhorn Stakes in April. Last time out was a decent third in the Grade 3 Kentucky Turf Cup September 13 after an OK fourth in the Grade 1 Sword Dancer at Saratoga August 17. Luis Contreras will be aboard the 12-1 shot from post 6.
Suntracer – multiple stakes winner finished third in the 2013 Kentucky Turf Cup and has been up and down since. For example – last time out was a terrific win in the Grade 3 Kentucky Turf Cup which followed a ninth in the minor American St. Leger Stakes at Arlington August 16, a third in the Grade 3 Stars and Stripes Stakes in July and a second behind War Dancer in the Grade 3 Louisville Handicap in May. He’s a tad tough to figure out ahead of this weekend but off a terrific win has to be in the conversation. Carlos Marquez Jr. will ride from post 3 at an intriguing 12-1 on the morning line.
Pyrite Mountain – has placed in his last six starts overall for trainer Todd Pletcher – four straight seconds including last time out behind Suntracer in the Grade 3 Kentucky Turf Cup Stakes September 13 followed three runner-up finishes in Allowance company. Other notable results include a third in the Grade 3 Ontario Derby last September and a third in the Breeders’ Stakes. He also won the Kingarvie Stakes in November, 2012. Pyrite Mountain has 13 career starts with just two wins but six seconds and two third place finishes. Jamie Spencer has the mount at 12-1 odds from gate 8.
Dynamic Sky – Canadian bred Mark Casse trained colt looked very good early in his career – highlighted by a second in the Grade 1 Dixiana Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland in October, 2012. He went on to a sixth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, a win in the minor Pasco Stakes and a good second in the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis Stakes in February 2013. He has been up and down since. Last time out was a good second in the Grade 1 Northern Dancer Turf Stakes here September 14 which followed a fifth in the Grade 2 Sky Classic, a second in the Grade 2 Nijinsky Stakes here July 19, a decent third behind Aldous Snow and ahead of Forte Dei Marmi in the Grade 3 Singspiel here July 6 and an Allowance score on this track. He also had a nice win in the minor Plate Trial Stakes on this track last June. Dynamic Sky has been in there with some of the best but will be looking for his first graded stakes score Sunday. Patrick Husbands has been tabbed to ride from post 5 at 15-1 on the morning line.
Reporting Star – Pat Parente pupil enters this weekend off an OK third in the Grade 1 Northern Dancer Turf Stakes here September 14 after a good second in the Grade 2 Sky Classic Stakes on this track August 16 and a three race win streak – all Allowance races here – the last coming July 27. He has placed in all six graded stakes starts in his career including the third last time out, the second before that, a third in last year’s Grade 3 British Columbia Derby, seconds in the Grade 3 Canadian Derby and the Grade 3 Pegasus Stakes last summer and a third in the Grade 3 Palm Beach Stakes in March, 2013. Reporting Star has four wins, four seconds and seven third place finishes in 17 career starts and will be looking for his first ever graded stakes score. He will leave from the outside post Sunday with Justin Stein in the irons at 20-1 on the morning line.
O’Prado Ole – has 12 career starts for trainer Dale Romans with two wins, a second and two third place finishes. He is coming off a fourth in the Grade 3 Kentucky Turf Cup September 13 which followed a sixth in the Grade 1 Sword Dancer Invitational at Saratoga August 17, a good second to The Pizza Man in the Grade 3 Stars and Stripes Stakes July 12 and consecutive fifths in Allowance Optional Claiming races at Churchill Downs. He has yet to win in graded stakes company but came close three back. Channing Hill will be in the reins from the inside post this Sunday at 20-1 odds.
