On the other hand, Josh Hazlewood, who is the most expensive Australian player in the upcoming season, was recovering from side and calf injuries for a long time. Hazlewood’s side and calf injuries turned into a hip issue, forcing him out of the recent ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

With the lucrative IPL 2025 just around the corner, Australia’s top cricketers have made their priorities clear—choosing franchise cricket over domestic red-ball commitments. Despite five teams still in the race for the Sheffield Shield final, the country’s IPL-bound stars are set to fly to India rather than represent their states in the tournament’s decider.
Australian stars prioritize IPL 2025 over Sheffield Shield
Meanwhile, Australian players will prioritize IPL 2025 over the Sheffield Shield despite five states still being in contention to make it to the final. South Australia stars Travis Head (Sunrisers Hyderabad), Jake Fraser-McGurk (Delhi Capitals), and Spencer Johnson (Kolkata Knight Riders) are all heading straight to the IPL 2025, despite their domestic team already booking a spot in the Shield final.
On the other hand, Xavier Bartlett, Josh Inglis, and Aaron Hardie will also skip the final round of Sheffield Shield, as they are all set to play under Ricky Ponting for the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the upcoming season. Last season, Matthew Wade had opted to play in Tasmania’s Shield final and missed the start of Gujarat Titans’ campaign.
Notably, the IPL 2025 is all set to kickstart on March 22 with the RCB facing the defending champions KKR at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
