India’s disappointing loss to Bangladesh opened up an opportunity for Pakistan to reclaim their spot at the top of the ICC men’s ODI rankings.

The Indian men’s cricket team missed a great opportunity to become the new world No. 1 in the ICC ODI ranking, especially given the 2023 ODI World Cup starting soon at home. But a loss in the inconsequential Asia Cup 2023 Super Four match to Bangladesh meant India fumbled the chance and also meant that Pakistan now have an opportunity to reclaim the top spot irrespective of India’s result in the Asia Cup final on Sunday against defending champions Sri Lanka.

Ahead of the clash against Bangladesh, India were ranked second on the ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings with 116 rating points, behind only top-placed Australia, who had 118 points.

Team India had the chance to beat Bangladesh and Australia lost to South Africa in Centurion in their fourth ODI. As India did not win, they slipped down to third behind Pakistan and Australia.

But Pakistan can reclaim their top spot in the ODI world rankings.

If South Africa beat Australia in Johannesburg on Sunday in the last of the five-match ODI series, the Aussies, ranked number one, will slip to the third spot, if India wins the Asia Cup. Australia can be second if India loses the Asia Cup final to Sri Lanka in Colombo.

In fact, India and Australia will keep their tussle for the top spot, given they are slated to face off in a three-match series, which starts on 22 September, that will decide which side will head to the ODI World Cup as World No. 1.
