Ontario Derby 2015 at Woodbine Racetrack

Las Vegas, NV – The Grade 3 Ontario Derby goes down on Woodbine Racetrack’s All Weather Track in Toronto, Ontario on Sunday, September 20. Three year olds will be after the winner’s share of the $150,000 when they go 1 1/8 miles.

A field of eight will take to the track in the Ontario Derby – race 8 on Woodbine’s Sunday schedule. Post time is 4:35 PM. Here is a peek into the past performances of all eight entries for this Grade 3 stakes.

Billy’s Star – Roger Attfield pupil has two wins and two third place finishes in nine career starts and enters off one of those wins – the minor Victoria Park Stakes by 1 1/4 lengths here August 23. Before that was a third in an Allowance August 2, a fourth in the minor Queen’s Plate and a sixth in the minor Plate Trial Stakes in June. Billy’s Star makes his graded stakes debut Sunday and will be after his second straight stakes score from post 7 with Alan Garcia in the saddle of the 119 pound co-highweight.

Breaking Lucky – raced all three legs of the Canadian Triple Crown with mixed results. He did win the Prince of Wales Stakes at 13-1 odds at Fort Erie July 28 but also had a ninth in the Breeders’ Stakes last time out on this track August 16 and a fifth in the Queen’s Plate here July 5. He has two wins and a second place finish in seven career starts and makes his graded stakes debut Sunday. James McAleney gets the call from post 5.

Firespike – won the minor Juvenile Turf Stakes at Gulfstream Park West in November and the minor OBS Championship Stakes in January to start the year and has been up and down since. Last time out was a second in the minor Victoria Park Stakes here August 23 after a fifth in the Grade 3 American Derby in July, a seventh in the Grade 2 American Turf Stakes in May and a third in the Grade 2 Spiral Stakes in March. Firespike has 12 career starts with three wins, two seconds and two third place finishes but looks for a first graded stakes score Saturday. Luis Contreras gets the call from aboard the 119 pound co-highweight post 3.

Beat Goes On – British bred colt makes his North American debut after six career starts at home produced two wins. He enters off a Handicap score at Wolverhampton July 23 after failing to place in his previous three starts. Outside of his win last time out Beat Goes On hasn’t been great. Emma-Jayne Wilson will be in the saddle hoping to guide Beat Goes On to his second straight win – from gate 4.

Decision Day – Josie Carroll trained colt has nine career with two wins, a second and a third place finish. He won two straight races on this track at the end of 2014 including the minor Coronation Futurity but has placed in just one of six starts since. Last time out was a fourth in the minor Toronto Cup Stakes here July 26 after a third in the minor Charlie Barley Stakes July 4, a ninth in the Grade 3 Marine Stakes , a fifth in the minor Wando Stakes in April, a seventh in the Grade 3 Palm Beach Stakes in March and an eighth in the Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes in January. Decision Day hasn’t been all that competitive this year but hopes to change his fortunes around from gate 6 with Jesse Campbell guiding him.

Kingsport – Sid Attard trained colt makes his graded stakes debut having posted four wins, two seconds and two third place finishes in nine career starts. Last time out was a second in the minor Vice Regent Stakes here August 30 after consecutive wins – the minor Deputy Minister Stakes July 22 and an Optional Claiming July 4. Kingsport has been competitive every time out and hopes to be again Sunday. Patrick Husbands has the mount from the outside gate 8.

Ethical Funds – finally broke maiden last time out in his seventh career start – on this track August 28. Before that was a second and a fourth in similar races earlier this year. He has just one graded stakes start – a fifth in the Grade 2 Summer Stakes here last September. Ethical Funds will be after his first stakes win Sunday when he leaves from the rail with Emile Ramsammy.

Lucky Lindy – Mark Frostad trained colt finished seventh in his debut and has placed in all four starts since, Last time out was a respectable third in the minor Breeders’ Stakes here August 16 after a second in the minor Toronto Cup Stakes here July 26 and another second in an Allowance three weeks earlier. He makes his graded stakes debut and will be after his first stakes win from gate 2 with Robby Albarado guiding him.
