Offlee Naughty Proves Offlee Resilient in San Luis Rey

Donna and Jim Daniell’s Offlee Naughty  did not let a slam on the brakes at the top of the stretch keep him from the winner’s circle as the 4-year-old rallied home a gritty victor of the $101,000 San Luis Rey Stakes (G3T) May 13 at Santa Anita Park.

Entering off a career-best effort in capturing the April 8 Charles Whittingham Stakes (G2T) over the Santa Anita turf course, the 5-year-old son of Flashback  was made the 8-5 favorite Saturday, this time racing 1 1/2 miles.

As Charles Whittingham third-place finisher Opry  blasted to the front end and quickly opened up a sizeable advantage on the seven-horse field down the backstretch, jockey Umberto Rispoli bided his time far back in fifth aboard Offlee Naughty. Charging through quick splits of :23.95, :47.50, and 1:12.71, Orpy’s lead slowly diminished once the field turned for home as Offlee Naughty ranged into contention. Angled to the inside around the final bend, Offlee Naughty found himself bottled up with nowhere to advance and he glanced off the inside rail at the five-sixteenths pole.

Recovering his momentum under jockey Umberto Rispoli, Offlee Naughty ($5.20) drove to the finish, sweeping clear by 1 1/4 lengths. The Michael McCarthy trainee completed the 1 1/2 miles in a final time of 2:24.87 over a firm turf course.

Planetario  and second favorite Dicey Mo Chara  completed the trifecta.

Bought for only $4,000 as a 2-year-old, Offlee Naughty was bred by Gary and Mary West in Kentucky.
