Nobody Listens, Damon’s Mound Score Graded Wins at Parx

Thirteen months after his first graded stakes win in last August’s Saratoga Special Stakes (G2), Damon’s Mound  added a second.

Racing Sept. 23 at Parx Racing, the son of Girvin   turned back a bid from Nautical Star  to inch clear in the final furlong for a 1 1/4-length victory under Junior Alvarado in the $400,000 Gallant Bob Stakes (G2) for 3-year-old sprinters. He raced six furlongs over a sloppy track in 1:10.24, following splits of :21.68 and :45.29, respectively set by Sir Lancealot and Ryvit .

His successful stalking victory was the second straight win for the Michele and Cliff Love-owned bay after he took the ungraded Robert Hilton Memorial Stakes at Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races last month. His apparent return to top form after a series of defeats that began last September and continued until August left the Michelle Lowell trainee as the 9-5 favorite for the Gallant Bob. He paid $5.60 to win.

The Cliff Love-bred colt, out of the Stroll  mare San Antonio Stroll , improved to 4-for-9 with Saturday’s victory, boosting his earnings to $601,700.

Nautical Star, who bid threateningly on the outside in early stretch under Irad Ortiz Jr., could not pass the winner despite Damon’s Mound not switching leads down the lane. Nautical Star finished a clear second ahead of third-place Gordian Knot

Post-Race Reaction

  • “They outfooted me the first part, the two faster horses on the outside, then I was sitting in a beautiful trip,” Alvarado said.

  • “It seems like he’s doing so well, and we’re just so happy that we have the horse in the barn and that he is doing as good as he is now,” said Mitch Butler, Lovell’s assistant.

Girvin, a top-10 second-crop sire, stood this year for $25,000 at Airdrie Stud in Midway, Ky. Besides Damon’s Mound, his other graded winners include Faiza  and Dorth Vader .

Nobody Listens Does the Talking in Turf Monster

Immediately taking charge over a yielding turf course, Nobody Listens  pulled away from the opposition down the stretch for a three-length victory in the $250,000 Turf Monster Stakes (G3T) earlier on the card.

Smooth B  chased throughout, finishing well clear of 3-5 favorite Roses for Debra , the lone female in a five-furlong grass dash. Very few horses passed or made up meaningful ground over the rain-soaked course. The winner was clocked in 1:01.40, reflecting the tiring conditions, after setting splits of :23.80 and :48.46 under Tyler Gaffalione.

Nobody Listens, who races for owners Matthew Kwiatkowski, Jason Kaylon and Roger Browning, won for the fourth consecutive time. He captured the Parx Dash last month in another local five-furlong grass test. The gray 5-year-old gelding is based in Indiana with trainer Tim Eggleston.

Nobody Listens improved to 14-for-26 with Saturday’s victory, boosting his career earnings to $704,230. The Turf Monster was his first graded victory.

The Winning Owners

  • “We planned it out to avoid all the big boys for right now. And now we’re here, and we’re hoping to go to the Breeders’ Cup,” Browning said, referring to the Nov. 4 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1T) at Santa Anita Park.

  • “Pretty lucky to have an Indiana-bred that can run like this,” Kwiatkowski added.

Nobody Listens is a son of 16-year-old Conveyance, by Indian Charlie. Water White, Rock On Luke, Plane Talk, and Miss Conveyance are other black-type winners by Conveyance. He stood this year for an advertised fee of $3,000 at Blue Ribbon Farm in Buckley, Wash.
