New Mexico Trainer Summers Suspended

The New Mexico Racing Commission issued trainer Nancy N. Summers a summary suspension March 23 and excluded her from the grounds at Sunland Park pending the outcome of a March 30 hearing before the board of stewards.

An investigator with the Horseracing Welfare and Integrity Unit found three hypodermic syringes in Summers’ tack room, according to the charges. No person other than a licensed veterinarian is allowed to possess syringes. HIWU administers the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority’s national Anti-Doping and Medication Control program.

Summers races almost exclusively in New Mexico and Arizona. She has won 269 races (20%) from 1,366 starters from 2016-24, with purse earnings of $6,530,049.

Summers’ top-earning horse is multiple stakes winner Mine That Star , a 7-year-old half brother to multiple grade 1 winner Dullahan  and 2009 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Mine That Bird . By Pioneerof the Nile and out of the Smart Strike mare Mining My Own , Mine That Star was purchased by current owner Judge Lanier Racing as a horse of racing age for $35,000 at the 2020 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale. He has won 10 times, including seven stakes races, since the purchase.

Summers could not be reached for comment regarding the charges.
