After being vanned off following his 2 1/4-length victory in the $201,00 Hollywood Gold Cup Stakes (G2) May 27 at Santa Anita Park, Mr Fisk was diagnosed with a condylar fracture.
Trainer Bob Baffert reported the injury on social media.
“Mr Fisk is resting comfortably in his stall, ready for dinner,” Baffert reported on X. “He has a condylar fracture and will have surgery (May 28). His prognosis is excellent. Jockey Kazushi Kimura took great care of his horse.”
After closing out 2023 with a pair of stakes wins, including a clear victory in the Native Diver Stakes (G3), Mr Fisk has won two of his first three starts of 2024 as the 4-year-old son of Arrogate entered Monday’s 1 1/4-mile race for 3-year-olds and older off a 2 1/4-length victory in the Californian Stakes April 20 at Santa Anita.
Mr Fisk was pulled up after the Hollywood Gold Cup and he didn’t enter the winner’s circle as he was vanned off. After the race, winning Kimura told Baffert Mr Fisk felt a little off.
Mr Fisk is campaigned by his breeder, Sunny Brook Stables. With his fifth win in 11 starts, Mr Fisk’s earnings surged to $369,700.
Bred in Kentucky, Mr Fisk is the first starter out of Irish-bred mare Plein Air, by Manduro. Plein Air won listed stakes in the United States and Italy.
