Mohammed Shami’s Australia departure date officially revealed

The premier India National Cricket Team right-arm pacer, Mohammed Shami, is all set to travel to Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 very soon.

As Mohammed Shami proved his fitness by playing a Ranji Trophy match, the childhood coach of the pacer, Mohammed Badruddin, revealed when he would be leaving for Australia.

Shami finally made his competitive cricket return during the ongoing Ranji Trophy match between Bengal and Madhya Pradesh at the Holkar Cricket Stadium.

He was out of action since the World Cup 2023 in India. After suffering an Achilles tendon injury, he underwent surgery, following which he had to undergo a long rehabilitation program.

Shami was on the path to full recovery before the home Test series against Bangladesh and New Zealand. However, his fresh knee setback pushed his comeback date further.

Mohammed Shami was then seen bowling to India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar in the nets after the Bengaluru Test between India and New Zealand and speaking to media at an event, he confirmed that he was pain-free.

Still, he was not picked in India’s Test squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 as the BCCI selection committee put their faith in the young pacer.

Mohammed Shami shines in Ranji Trophy match

Mohammed Shami first batted in his comeback game and scored 2 runs off 6 balls before getting dismissed as Bengal were bowled out for 228.

Then came Shami’s turn to bowl, and on day 1, he delivered two spells of 6 and 4 overs, going wicketless. However, on day 2, the pacer dominated and bagged a 4-wicket haul.

Overall, in his 19 overs, he gave away 54 runs and picked up 4 wickets to send a message to the selection committee.

He will be joining the Indian team after the Adelaide (second) Test – Mohammed Badruddin

After Mohammed Shami’s heroics in the Ranji Trophy game, reports emerged about him being sent to Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after the first Test in Perth.

However, now the childhood coach of the pacer, Mohammed Badruddin, has revealed that Shami will travel to Australia after the second Test in Adelaide.

“He will be joining the Indian team after the Adelaide (second) Test. Now that he is back, proved his fitness, picked up wickets, he will be crucial for the team in the second half of the tour,” Badruddin was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.

While talking about his bowling against Madhya Pradesh, he stated that it didn’t look like the pacer was making a comeback from a long injury layoff.

“I saw his bowling clips and it didn’t feel like he was bowling after one year. You can’t take the art away from the artist. He has waited very patiently for this moment,” his coach stated.

Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah is set to lead India in the first Test against Australia in Perth if Rohit Sharma misses out on the game due to the birth of his second child.
