Mitchell Starc drops retirement bombshell

Australia National Cricket Team fast bowler Mitchell Starc has made a massive statement about his future in the Big Bash League (BBL). He said that he won’t be playing in the league till the time he retires as he doesn’t want to compromise on his international career.

Australia National Cricket Team fast bowler Mitchell Starc’s commitment to the national team is something that is unmatchable. In an era where players skip international cricket for leagues, the left-arm pacer has always skipped the T20 leagues to be fit for his team in all three formats.

Mitchell Starc last played in Big Bash League 2014-15 for Sydney Sixers

Starc hardly misses any games for Australia National Cricket Team and this was quite evident during the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Despite being injured, he forced himself to play and helped his team win.

After that, Starc is also part of the ongoing Test series against the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team. He played the first game of the series and played a decent role, helping his team win the first match by a massive margin.

To keep himself always available for Australia, Mitchell Starc also hasn’t featured in the Big Bash League for more than a decade. He has played just 10 games in the tournament, with the last one coming in 2014-15 while playing for Sydney Sixers.

In the 10 games that he has played in the Big Bash League, Mitchell Starc has picked 20 wickets at an average of around 14. But since then he hasn’t featured in the league and there have been a lot of talks about him playing in the league.

If I retire from something, perhaps. Who knows – Mitchell Starc on his future in Big Bash League

While all the other Australian players play in the Big Bash League, Starc has kept himself away, and according to him, he doesn’t know about his future in the league. He said with Australia playing continuously, there are fewer chances of him playing in the league and it will be possible after he retires. Speaking to Perth Now, he said:

“I don’t know, to be honest. As long as the Australian summer is the way it is, where we have two weeks (off), not even – we had 10 days this year. If that’s how it is, probably not. If I retire from something, perhaps. Who knows?”

I really enjoy the BBL with Sydney – Mitchell Starc

Starc further added that he loved playing Big Bash League for Sydney Sixers but he doesn’t want to sacrifice his international cricket. He added:

“It’s hard to miss games to try and protect yourself. There’s always risk playing cricket, that’s never going to change. For me, I just want to keep enjoying playing as much cricket as I can. I really enjoy the BBL with Sydney.”

Starc recently made a return to the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2024 after missing quite a few seasons. He played for Kolkata Knight Riders and helped his team win the title.
